CHARLESTON SC BEACHES
A trip to the beach
second-nature around the Charleston area, as the city is ringed with
a wealth of oceanfront barrier and marsh islands with extensive
stretches of pristine sand and surf. Much of the local beach area is
easily-accessible, with ample public parking areas on the Isle of
Palms, Edisto Island and Folly Beach, as well as roadside parking
and access paths on Sullivan's Island. Gated properties on Kiawah
and Seabrook islands and the Isle of Palms offer more private
enjoyment of some beachfront areas, and along uninhabited Morris
Island, stretches of sandy shore facing the Atlantic as well as
inland are open to anyone approaching by boat.
Beach configurations
vary from island to island, but typically include wide expanses of
fine sand, bordered by large dunes filled with wildflowers and sea
oats. Tidal ebb and flow creates shallow, shimmering gullies that
attract crabs, shore birds and small fish, as well as exposing fresh
concentrations of sea shells, such as whelks, sand dollars, angel's
wings, and South Carolina's state shell, the beautiful lettered
olive. Beach waves also vary in height and intensity, as certain
locations on Folly Beach and the Isle of Palms are favored by
surfers and kiteboarders for more pronounced swells that provide
exceptional rides. With Charleston's temperate sub-tropical climate,
beach waves never get too cold to enjoy, as people wade, swim, and
frolick in the foaming surf year-round.
Another tantalizing
aspect of the Charleston beach surfline is its attraction to
colorful wildlife. Bottlenose dolphins love riding the gentle swells
just offshore, and can constantly be seen breaching and splashing in
the shallows. The acrobatic dive of the eastern brown pelican is
also a common sight along Charelston's beaches, as the hovering
birds locate fish from high above and hurtle with great splashes
into the waves.
At night during the
summer, barrier island beaches are sought after by giant loggerhead
sea turtles that wade ashore to lay eggs, which hatch in the sand
and send new generations back into the sea.
In Charleston, the term
beach is synonymous with relaxation and natural beauty, as people
enjoy day trips for sunbathing, swimming, strolling or family
picnics, while beachfront homeowners bask in the warm feel of
pleasurable sea breezes, listen to the soothing sounds of splashing
waves, and witness the eye-catching scenes of dunes, surf, and
skyline. Folly Beach, the Isle of Palms and Edisto Island all
feature public fishing piers and pavilions that offer beautfiul
views and excellent opportunities to land red drum, croaker and
mackerel. On Sullivan's Island, the beach curves along the entrance
of Charleston harbor to give majestic views of the historic city,
Fort Sumter and Charleston Harbor. Both Folly Beach and Edisto
Island have county and state parks directly on the beach as well,
where sunset walks, throwing a frisbee, dolphin-watching, or any
form of recreation is ever-changing and never dull.
